Pupils at Whitchurch have the opportunity to pursue a wide range of sports including gymnastics, swimming, tennis, football, netball and cricket, to name but a few. Pupils receive 2 hours of high quality PE each week and greatly enjoy these activities. In our grounds we have a gymnasium, a netball court and an astroturf sports pitch which enables us to provide outdoor sports throughout the year. To support our teaching of PE, we also have links with many local sports clubs including Reading FC, who have selected a number of our pupils to attend their football development centres. A number of former pupils of Whitchurch have also been lucky enough to obtain much sort after scholarships at Bradfield College through their ability in sport.

In addition to PE lessons within school, pupils are also given the opportunity to regularly compete in both intra school sports competitions through our weekly House teams sports matches and through our inter school sporting fixtures against other primary schools. Whitchurch Primary has an outstanding record of sporting achievement and has competed in nearly 200 sports matches/tournaments in the last 7 years. As well as competing in these inter school fixtures, pupils at Whitchurch have also been lucky enough to take part in some truly memorable experiences including : ·       Representing London Irish Rugby Club at the EDF Energy cup final ·       Playing rugby in front of a crowd of 65,000 at Twickenham Stadium ·       Playing football at Oxford United’s Kassam Stadium in front of a crowd of 5,000 ·       Twice representing South Oxfordshire at the Oxfordshire Youth Games. These achievements are made even more remarkable, when you consider the size of our school and the fact we are one of the smallest schools in Oxfordshire, as we regularly have to compete against schools, two, three, four, even five times our size. We constantly strive to improve on our success in sport and look to provide as many opportunities for our pupils to enjoy sport as possible. As part of this we were recently successful with our application for a grant from the BP Schools’ Link Awards for which we were given £15,800. This grant was awarded thanks to the hard work and enthusiasm shown by our pupils to further our sporting achievement. The award will allow us to purchase the latest equipment, teaching resources and training to develop our already successful school sports programme.
