The fundamental purpose of Physical Education and School Sport at Whitchurch is to ensure that all children, regardless of ability, are given the opportunity to express themselves physically whilst having fun.

The children are encouraged to develop skill and self-discipline, thus stimulating enjoyment, satisfaction and a sense of achievement.  Our children are offered a broad and balanced curriculum, allowing for enough differentiation to meet the variety of needs, ages, abilities and interests of the children.

Our PE sessions cover a huge variety of activities including gymnastics, dance, athletics, netball, football, cricket and swimming, to name just a few.

We would like every child to leave Whitchurch with a positive experience of sport, and with a willingness to participate in a variety of sports and activities because it is both enjoyable and important to them. We aim to provide physical education of the highest quality and promote excellence and encourage enjoyment in all fields.

Talent is nurtured and personal achievement in sport is emphasised at all levels.  Our pupils are exposed to the personal responsibility involved in playing for a team, as well as developing the commitment to personal and team goals.  The desirable outcomes of playing sport include developing self-esteem and confidence in all the pupils, regardless of ability.

In addition to 2 hours of high quality PE lessons within school each week, pupils are also given the opportunity to regularly compete in both intra school sports competitions through our House sports competitions and through our inter school sporting competitions against other primary schools.

The school has been recognised for its high quality provision and has been awarded the School Games Gold Standard Kitemark, the highest level of achievement, in each of the last four years.

Moreover, Whitchurch Primary was named ‘Sporting Primary School of the Year’ at the 2016 Oxfordshire Sports Awards.
